Sorroundings
A result of ancient origins and the richness of
its history, Tivoli boasts a vast artistic and
archaeological heritage that is of significant
interest.
Just 30 km from Rome on the slopes of the
Tiburtine Hills lies this holiday destination
that is famous most of all for its villas.
Villa Adriana,
build by the Emperor Adrian between 125 and 134
AD, covers an area of 120 hectares. The villa
includes a large variety of buildings, each of
which was to serve a particular purpose: the hot
baths, barracks for the praetorians, libraries,
an immense portico, peristyles, tanks and rows
of columns. It is said that the Emperor Adrian
wanted to reproduce in this villa the most
beautiful architectural features to be found in
the various parts of the empire.
Villa d’Este
was designed in 1550 by the Neapolitan architect
Pirro Ligorio. The Villa is famous most of all
for its many fountains with water rushing
uphill, suitable for creating visual and sound
effects that are unique in the world. By
building a special tunnel, the waters of the
Aniene were harnessed.
In the vast natural park of Villa Gregoriana
you can see caves, waterfalls and roman
remains. The “grande cascata” (grand waterfall),
with a drop of more than 100 metres, gushes out
of artificial channels excavated after the
catastrophic flooding of 1826.
Just a few kilometres from the town, in Bagni
di Tvoli there is the Acque Albule thermal
pool resort that is a popular destination. The
hot baths are open all year round.
Further you can visit in Tivoli the Temple of
Vesta (1st century BC)the Temple of
Sibilla (2nd century BC), tha roman
amphitheatre, the Gregorian Bridge, Rocca Pia
and many ancient churches.
